This research study is looking at biochemical changes in the blood and brain anatomy to learn more about autism spectrum disorder (ASD). To do this, Dr. Elliott Sherr and his colleagues are recruiting children 6+ who have been diagnosed with ASD to serve as participants. If willing and available, we would like both parents to participate. We prefer that the parents disclose any history or evidence of developmental delays and/or neurocognitive impairments (e.g., schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, Alzheimer’s, etc.).
Participation involves a blood draw, completion of some simple neuropsychological surveys, in-person testing, and several types of brain imaging, completed in the following three appointments:
Appointment 1: Approx. 4 hours, UCSF Mission Bay
- Blood draw (preferably for family members as well)
- In-person testing with Talia Berson
Appointment 2: 1.5 hours, UCSF Mission Bay
-Brain imaging in MRI machine
Appointment 3: Approx. 4 hours, UCSF Parnassus
-Brain imaging MEG
-In-person testing with Dr. Carly Demopoulos
Additionally, we ask each family to complete a packet of neuropsychological surveys, which can be completed at home and sent back to us in our pre-paid envelopes.
For their participation, families are compensated $20 for each blood draw, $30 for each packet of completed neuropsychological measures, $30 for the in-person clinical testing, and $60 for the imaging procedures. We will also happily cover your cost of parking at UCSF.
