Tara Rooney is a senior speech-language pathologist in the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences. She specializes in evaluating and caring for pediatric patients with autism spectrum disorder and neurodevelopmental disorders. Dr. Rooney conducts comprehensive diagnostic evaluations and provides a range of treatment services (individual and group therapy, parent training, and consultations). Clinical and scholarly interests include best practices in parent mediated (parent coaching) interventions and language development. 

Dr. Rooney earned her master's and doctoral degrees in speech-language pathology from Northwestern University. She completed advanced training in various evidence-based naturalistic interventions including Project ImPACT, Early Start Denver Model, and Pivotal Response Training (PRT).

Prior to joining UCSF Center for ASD and NDDs in 2015, Dr. Rooney worked at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford and Boston Children's Hospital. While in Boston Children's Early Intervention department, she was selected as a fellow in its Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) program. Dr. Rooney is an active member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, participating in several of its special interest groups, including those for learning, language and alternative and augmentative communication.
